The meeting was opened by First Vice President Helen Burch, with
the pledge led by Walt Splittstoesser.  Marianna Janssen led us in prayer.
Our guests included Erick Pece, Roy Pece, Jan Whitman, Ryan Gumbel, and Jan
and Melissa Gumbel, Ryan's parents.

A thank you from the Urbana Park District was read thanking us for
our continued support of Busey Woods.  Busey is the site of many school
field trips for children in the Champaign County schools.

A letter from Mark Sheldon was read requesting election judges.
600 are needed on election day.  This would be a service you could perform
for the club.  If you work and donate your services, $90 would be gifted to
the club in your name.  If you are interested, there will be a training
date.  Call the County Clerk's office to sign up.

550 Christmas trees have been ordered and will be delivered
November 25th at approx. 8:00-8:30 am.  Please mark this date on your
calendar.

1000 of the trifolds have been ordered.  You may pick these up at a
meeting.  These are a good recruiting tool.  Please give them to your
friends when you ask them to join with us in all the excellent activities
the Optimist Club participates in and supports.  We are going to recruit
new members from the Urbana Middle, Urbana High, and St. Joseph-Ogden
Middle and High School staffs.  Judy Pece read a letter she had written
about her first year as a member.

A Fair report was given by Gene Morgan.  We had a VERY successful Youth
Day.  1210 youth appeared that day for our free rides offer.  We had to
turn away about 25-25 youth due to the fact that Tinsley Amusements would
not give us any more bracelets.  We realized our budget!   Thanks to
everyone who worked.  Sunday the13th is our day to celebrate a successful
fair with the thank you picnic at Jim and Carol Manley's home in Fisher.
The picnic begins at 3:00 pm.  Bring a covered dish to share.  Steaks will
be furnished.  Gene Morgan and Keith Kessler will team up at the fair one
more year.  Thank you Gene and all who worked.  We could not have been
successful without each and every one of you!

Ryan Gumbel spoke to us about his great experience at the Junior Golf
Nationals at the PGA National Resort and Spa Golf Course in West Palm
Beach, Florida.  There were 150 young men in the 14-15 age group.  He
thanked us and plans to win this trip again.  He has golfed since he could
walk and his dad placed a club in his hands.  He is only the third from
this area to qualify for the National competition.

ILLNESS REPORT- Joan Newcomb was in Provena Covenant for surgery.  She is
at home recovering.  We wish her a speedy recovery and pray the surgeons
got all the cancer.  We miss you, Joan!  Send a card to Joan with your good
wishes.

Please mail cards to HILAH DEATLEY if you are so inclined.  She is the
widow of a past president, Frank.  She had arm surgery and is using a
walker.

BUS TRIP TO NORTHWESTERN
Is anyone interested in a bus trip to watch the Fighting Illini beat
Northwestern?  Ellen has reserved a wheelchair accessible coach bus.  The
cost will be $20.  The ticket price is $30 each.  You would bring any snack
or drink you want.  We may stop for a meal on the way home.  The time is
TBA.  The Quarterback Club trip for the same deal is $75.  Sign up until
September 15th.  You, and your spouse, children, friends are invited.
