President: Don Chenoweth

The installation meeting was held at TK Wendl's.  The meeting was
opened by President Don Chenoweth, with the pledge led by Howard
Schweighart.  Marianna Janssen led us in prayer.  Our guests were Dr. Jerry
and Margaret Wolf, Assistant Gov. of Region 3 from Vandalia, Illinois.
Many spouses were able to join us.  Helen's special guests were Jane Myers,
Jenny, Doug, and Jake Buchanan, and Sondra Smith, a high school classmate
from Maryland.

Jim Manley added his usual humor to the evening.  We were the envy
of Margaret Wolf who added that since she went to several of these
installation banquets, ours was very entertaining.
The meal was delicious, as it always is when we are at TK Wendl's.
The baked potatoes were extremely large, but Jim did not find a way to
include them in his dinner jokes.
Don thanked many members for their contributions to his term of
office and presented them each with a coaster with the OI Creed written on
it.  Perfect attendance awards were presented to
Judy Pece- 1 year,
Marianna Janssen, Melvin Janssen, Miriam Paluch, and Don Chenoweth- 2 years
(Melvin and Don have additional perfect
        attendance years in previous
states),
Dottie Mercer- 3 years,
Mason Minnes- 4 years,
Connie Minnes- 9 years,
Ralph Patzke, Jack Whitman- 12 years,
Gene Morgan, Walt Splittstoesser- 13 years.

Kevin Buskirk and Gene Morgan received year service bars for 15 and
20 years respectively.
The 2000-2001 officers were installed by Dr. Jerry Wolf.
Helen Burch, newly installed president, greeted us and spoke about
her goals.  She wants CU Optimist Club to be Honor Club.  She looks forward
to our club sponsoring a CDHH Oratorical contestant.  The meeting was
closed with Jack Whitman leading us in the Optimist Creed.
The 1st quarter meeting of the Illinois District will be hosted in
Urbana at the Eastland Suites on North Cunningham on October 20-21.  We
need donations of snacks and beverages in the hospitality room 6-11 pm
Friday, October 20th.  A driver is needed to drive spouses to Early
American Museum in Mahomet Saturday 8:45 - noon.  Our own Walt
Splittstoesser will be a featured presenter on the topic of time management
at 10:15-11:45 am.

Howard would appreciate constructive ideas in order to make the
Christmas tree project better.  Please speak to him if you have suggestions.
Ellen would like suggestions about a social event for members.  Do
you want to go to an Illini basketball game?  How about an Illini baseball
game? How about a program at the Virginia Theater?
