President: Don Chenoweth
The meeting was opened by President Don Chenoweth, with the pledge
led by Walt Splittstoesser. Marianna Janssen led us in prayer. Our guests
were King Underwood, spouse, and Darla Frye, proposed member. Darla is an
Urbana Middle School teacher and basketball coach. She graduated from
Eastern Illinois University.
News
Evelyn Underwood recently got a PhD from the University of Illinois
in curriculum education, after what she says was seven long years.
Congratulations, Dr. Underwood! She had previously received a law degree
from Indiana University.
The 1st quarter meeting of the Illinois District will be hosted in
Urbana at the Eastland Suites on North Cunningham on October 20-21. We
will need volunteers to help with registration and the hospitality room.
A Boy Scout troop will present the colors on Saturday morning and Heidi
Muir, UHS senior, will sing our national anthem to open the meetings.
A board meeting was held September 14th to plan the budget for the
2000-2001 fiscal year. It will be presented for approval September 21st.
If you have not yet paid your dues, get with the program. They are due by
October 1st! Mail or give the $60 to Walt Splittstoesser, Treasurer.
Program
We had two programs. Marian Wyatt and the Centennial High School
swing choir, Expressions, entertained grandly. Howard's granddaughter,
Lindsey, is a member of the group. This is the choir we supported on their
trip to New York competition. The club passed the hat for a donation.
James Talley, master gardener, gave a talk about his interests and the
requirements of growing great plants.
1000 of the trifolds have been ordered. You may pick these up at a
meeting. These are a good recruiting tool. Please give them to your
friends when you ask them to join with us in all the excellent activities
the Optimist Club participates in and supports.

Joan Newcomb is recovering just great. She was at the meeting to give her
greetings.
