President Helen Burch
The meeting was opened by President Pro tem Ralph Patzke. Joan
Newcomb led us in the pledge and Marianna Janssen in prayer. Our guest was
Jan Whitman.
Program
Walt Splittstoesser gave a talk and showed slides about his travels
in Australia.
Announcements
The club received a thank you from Kathy Plunk of Mansfield for
hosting the Youth Day at the county fair.
Gene met with the fair board president and a new contract was
agreed upon. When the fair board contracts with the amusement bidder, the
youth day, with 1200 kids, will be included.
The Springfield convention was attended by Walt and Shirley
Splittstoesser and Mason Minnes. Corky Helms of Belleville was elected Gov.
Elect.
Helen, Mason and Connie attended the Peoria Chiefs baseball game
and saw them defeat a Wisconsin club. Good fellowship was shared with OI
members from both Peoria clubs and the Bloomington and Normal clubs. This
is an annual event at this time of year.
The fair picnic was well attended. Lorna even had enough faith in
Jim that she got into the canoe with him for a ride up and down the
"river." Jim did manage to get Helen wet even though she did not go near
the river.
Howard Schweighart reported that tree orders on Fraser and Douglas
Firs were increased. Scotch pine ordered was reduced to 100. Tree
expenses are up $2400 from last year due to tree price increases and no
discounting. Volunteers are needed to assist in our selling trees. Does
anyone know of a scout troop or church youth group that would help? Adults
are needed too.
Illness report
Tera Buskirk had gall bladder surgery August 15th. She is
recovering very well. Matt Minnes continues to improve. He still has a
four inch blood clot in the jugular vein and remains on antibiotics and
blood thinners. The club sent both of them plants.
